Blueberry bushes are a deciduous bush ( shrubs or trees that shed their leaves annually) that prefer an acidic soil. The soil site should be well drained and mulching will aid in retaining the moisture. Try using pine needles or pine straw which will add some of the much needed acidity to the soil and prevent it from drying out. Shown here is a 4 year old " low bush " variety that produces small to medium berries. I often find myself eating the berries straight from the shrub once they have ripened.
Notable Uses: In preserves, pies, juices, salads
Captured in the photo below is a picture of ripening blueberries from last spring. Once in the spring and again in fall we fertilize the soil with Espoma "Holly~tone" for Evergreens and Azaleas. For the last several years, throughout the season however, we feed it "Jack's Acid Special" 17-6-6 plant food. It seems to have made a difference in the production of berries compared to the first 2-3 years with some of our blueberry bushes.
